Thanks John, at last I now I know exactly what the term 'cognitive dissonance' really means.

PREMIER JOHN Brumby was last night claiming ‘’a very strong result’’ in the Altona byelection, despite the government suffering a large swing in one of Labor’s safest seats.

Speaking to the Labor faithful at Laverton North last night, Mr Brumby said the message from voters was that they wanted the government to ‘’push faster in delivering results’’ in the $38 billion transport plan. But besides that, Mr Brumby did not concede the 12.3 per cent swing against the government contained a broader message.

''If there is a message that I have heard through this byelection - we'll push ahead now. You'll see a government with a lot of energy, with a lot of momentum and with a lot of action between now and the end of the year. This is a very strong result for the Labor Party.''

Ms Hennessy won the seat 57.9 to 42.1 after preferences were distributed.

Her primary vote of 47.5 per cent was the lowest the party has recorded in the seat and a plunge from Ms Kosky’s vote of 60.6 per cent in 2006.

What was it John said? Oh yes - "This is a very strong result for the Labor Party."

oh it was about Transport alright, just not the area Johnno assumed.

It was a very strong MESSAGE for Labor.

It's always easy to blur the figures when the spin gets going fast enough.

You'll see a government with a lot of energy, with a lot of momentum and with a lot of action between now and the end of the year.
Yes, that would be the nervy, hyperactive action of a herd of panicked pollies.
